Dhanteras

The first day that commences the entire five days Diwali celebration, Dhanteras is a celebration of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera and Lord Dhanvantri,. This Hindu festival starts with people shopping for gold, silver items and utensils that is considered to bring good luck to the families. This auspicious day falls in the month of Ashvin as per the Hindu Calendar on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha. To impress Goddess Lakshmi, an evening puja is organized and prasad is prepared which includes coriander seeds, jaggery, boondi ladoo and kheer. People also buy brooms on this day believing that it will rid them of poverty and misfortune and will bring luck to the family.
